DIGITAL FORENSICS · CYBER-MED

Method comes before tools.

Redazione Cyber-Med · Aggiornato il

A useful analysis must make it clear how its findings were reached.

Define the assignment

Before acquiring data, the questions, devices, authorisations and limits of the assignment must be clear. This scope guides the choice of methods and tools.

Preserve and document

Evidence handling requires care in preservation and recording operations. Documenting acquisitions, transfers and analysis makes it possible to reconstruct the work performed.

Understand the context

Files, metadata and communications can be compared to reconstruct a sequence of events. The meaning of a trace depends on its context and the checks performed.

State the limitations

A report distinguishes observed data, interpretations and matters that could not be established. No single tool guarantees complete extraction or definitive conclusions.

  1. 00:00–00:07 One file is not the whole story. Understanding data requires context and a documented method.
  2. 00:07–00:14 What question are we addressing? Before analysis, clarify the assignment, devices, authorisations and limitations.
  3. 00:14–00:21 Every step matters. Preserving evidence and recording operations allows the work to be reconstructed.
  4. 00:21–00:28 A date needs interpretation. For example, a file’s date must be read alongside metadata and other available traces.
  5. 00:28–00:35 Clear findings. Explicit limitations. Distinguish observations, hypotheses and unresolved points. Contact: info@cyber-med.it
